Andrea Askowitz is the author of My Miserable, Lonely, Lesbian Pregnancy. Her stories have appeared in The New York Times, Salon, The Rumpus, Huffington Post, AEON, and The Writer, and have aired on NPR and PBS. Andrea produces and hosts the podcast Writing Class Radio. She just finished a new memoir called No One Knows I’m Famous.
Andrea is a self-professed story-telling missionary and is passionate about helping advocates learn how to effectively tell their story.
Understanding how to tell a good story can be really helpful as we advocate for our loved ones with disabilities, navigate systems and build community. People often don’t really get our experience or why we want what we want for our family members. Being able to tell a good story is an important way that we can help people understand, relate and become allies.
Andrea graciously agreed to join me on the podcast to talk about the power of story-telling and to help me refine one of my stories. And Andrea tells a story or two of her own.
You will no doubt chuckle, you might blush, and you could tear up. And you will definitely understand me just a little better through the stories I share.
